Foundation owner Nick Melillo traveled to the island of Jamaica in 2015 to have some fun along with searching for the country’s rarely used tobacco. He soon located one of the oldest farms growing and processing leaves utilizing traditional methods that have been employed for over a thousand years. He then put his mad scientist hat on and combined his Master Blender skills by applying what he calls “Caribbean atmospheric herbal fusion.” The short version of this is that the combination of this process with coveted Jamaican and vintage Nicaraguan leaves produced a series of cigars ranging from mild and smooth to medium-full bodied and beyond. Yes, they’re totally different and have become pleasant diversions for experienced smokers as well as newcomers.

This edition has an interesting back story. Hamlet Paredes is a very well known cigar roller hailing from Cuba that Rocky actually assisted leaving Cuba to come to the US. With attention to detail, Serie R Esteli uses tobacco growing in the mountains of Jalapa, Nicaragua. Dubbed Jalapa Sol. The wrapper of the cigar is Nicaraguan from Jalapa, while the binder is Honduran Jamastran and the fillers contain Jamastran and Honduran La Entrada. It’s important to note that the select ligero and viso leaves coming from multiple locations complete this complex blend. No doubt, the goal here is to create a gentler version of the famed Serie R Original. The results are as expected!
Noted reviewer KATMAN simply states this cigar is “ Rich and balanced with a lot of character” Cigar Dojo says, “The strength settles in at a very comfortable medium body” Leaf Enthusiast rates it a solid 90. Don Tomas Maduro is another popular version of this storied brand.
This darkly wrapped edition is known for giving brand fans a bit more character than the original blend. Using a grade A Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper starts thing off. Diesel Whiskey Row is another unique collaboration with AJ Fernandez along with Diesel and the Rabbit Hole Bourbon distillery.
The binder leaves were aged in bourbon barrels from Rabbit Hole Distillery that were initially placed at the factory since 2016. The rest of the blend uses a dark 5 year old Ecuadorian Habano wrapper and fillers tobaccos from the 3 top growing regions of Nicaragua. And each of these leaves has been aged for 5 to 8 years. The result is an amazing medium to slightly full bodied smoke to say the least!
Blind Man’s Puff emphatically states, “The smoke output and construction were spot on and it’s hard to find fault with anything.” To further illustrate the characteristics, noted reviewer KATMAN describes it perfectly. “Lovely components of honey, marzipan, caramel, custard, whipped cream, black licorice, and malted milk balls. CAO Classic: Maduro is formally known as the CAO L’Anniversaire Maduro.
Its wrapper is fermented under extreme heat for three months until it becomes rich and dark with an even burn and razor-thin carbon ring. It’s then wrapped around an Ecuadoran binder and a blend of Nicaraguan and Dominican tobaccos to produce an outstanding smoke with a lavish finish.
The result is a spectacular cigar standing the test of time for over 25 years. This is a medium plus to full bodied smoke is meant for seasoned smokers and passionados. Newcomers need not apply.

It took about ten years for CAO to come up with this darkly wrapped counterpart to their legendary gold line. Cigar Aficionado had kind words in 2007 for this flavorful and medium bodied maduro, as well. “Near black, this cigar has a solid core of sweet tobacco, complemented by nuts, coffee and a hint of leather on the finish.” It goes to show you that after 15 years, this cigar is still a winner!
